The symptoms of video game addiction which is recognized by the World Health Organization as gaming disorder include a pattern of behavior of preoccupation with gaming that takes precedence over all other interests and daily activities, impaired control over gaming, and persistent use despite negative consequences. At Sober Living, we provide evidence-based therapies and skills to promote a healthier relationship with technology while exploring the issues gaming addresses.
When Gaming Becomes a Disorder
Gaming disorder is diagnosed when it disturbs the optimal functioning of the individual, their families, social relationships, educational or occupational functioning for a period of at least 12 months. Symptoms include neglect of fundamental needs such as food and sleep, disregarding of mounting negative consequences, losing awareness of the passing of time, and reliance on gaming to cope with stress and emotions.
What We Do
We address gaming disorder with a variety of techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, schedules of activity, promoting social engagement skills, and targeting a specific lifestyle balance. Gaming does not need to be completely discontinued but we aim to facilitate a balanced, non-compulsive use of technology.
Underlying Issues
Gaming addiction is often a cover up for underlying mental health issues such as social anxiety, depression, difficulties with self-regulation and self-control, ADHD, and loneliness. Our clinical team assesses for and treats co-occurring disorders along with problem gaming.
Promoting Balance
Our aim in therapy is for individuals to maintain a balanced lifestyle where gaming, if not completely eliminated, is healthy and appropriate. We teach social skills, encourage new leisure activities, focus on physical well-being through exercise, and promote interpersonal skills as well as real-world community involvement.
